Hello!
I was out in Death Valley over this past weekend! (Had a great time!) But we went over some pretty rough and muddy roads. Anyway, we got back on the highway after a day of 4x4ing and found that we had no air conditioner. It didn't cool at all. I have checked all the fuses in the two fuses boxes. Does any body have any ideas to why this doesn't work? I have a stock '93 xlt 4 door with the 4.0 v6.

Thanks
John

So it quit all of a sudden? Maybe the system lost pressure or a electrical connector came off.

thats what i was wondering- we were in a lot of mud as well so could something be clogged up?

all the fuses that i checked seemed to be in working order.

That sounds like a killer trip :)

A quick thing to check is the a/c clutch gap and system pressure. See if the clutch comes on by jumping the ACCS (cycle switch)

gotta help me here!!!

Are these checks something I can do at home with limited knowledge and tools? If they are, please tell me how!

Thanks a lot for the help - i don't really want to spend another $500 in repairs

hello again!

HELP

is there anywhere i can view a shop manual online? or an online guide to air conditioners?
I am being hired this weekend to drive people around
I NEED A/C FOR THAT!!!

THANKS

I bought one on Ebay for 40 bucks and a CD rom for $12.

Hello Again

Thanks RiverRat for your help

I just purchased a book off ebay - but i'll have to wait a while for it to come. In the mean time, could you help me figure out what/where the a/c clutch gap and how to jump the ACCS?

Thanks VERY much for your help!!!

Hello ....again

Just wanted to fill in some info that I figured out in the last 45 minutes. (Spent those in the driveway trying to test out different stuff and getting really muddy in the process (haven't washed my car yet))

The clutch never engages - no matter what position the hot-cold lever or the (max a/c, off, panel, defroster etc.) lever is in. I also looked and saw that it uses the R-12 freon.

From what I understand the clutch won't engage when there isn't enough freon in the system and you can no longer purchase the R-12 freon? Or, is there an electrical connection that just rattled out on a washboardy road? (PLEASE HOPE THAT IT IS AN ELECTIRCAL CONNECTION!!!:p

Thanks for all the help
John

On the ac accumulator there is a switch. Take the connector off and jump the terminals with a wire. Turn on the a/c. If the compressor comes on then you know either the switch is bad and/or the refrigerant is low.

If the compressor does not come on then you willl need to run more tests.

There are a lot of tests that require a/c pressure gauges and the service manual but this is a quick test that i have used to at least get me pointed in the right direction.
