I haven't worked on any of the newer Ford products with the dial switch like your's, but I have seen several GM (mostly Chevy trucks) switches fail. The only fix for those is to replace the control panel (they had a problem with the contacts breaking inside). You might want to check with your local Ford dealer and see if this has been a problem on any of the Ford products. At the least you are most likely going to have to replace the control panel.

Likewise, I've never had my Ex apart, but this happened on an old GMC pickup I had. With the GMC, the flaps that control the airflow are moved by vacuum. If there is no pressure, the flaps all close, and air is routed to the defrost vents.

I'm guessing that the default (all flaps closed) is the defrost on the Ford's too, but I don't think it uses a vacuum. What you may have is a broken cable in the selector.

Now you've got me curious. I'm going to have to break out my repair manual and see how it works.

i am having the exact problem except that sometimes it just decides to work and i dont think about it then for days it will be on defrost. this is so anoying when it is raining or humid an dyou cant keep the window defrosted and stay cool at the same time. let us know if youahve any success. i plan getting my haynes book out and seeing if i can find the culprit.
