2008 Sport Trac XLT
Hey all. I just recently bought my 2008 ST with 147k miles. Had to have the wheel bearings replaced and some differential work done but now she drives like a champ!

My questions:

1. I have a manual key. Does the XLT come with the ability to use a fob to unlock/lock the doors? I thought about buying one at OReilly and programming it but not sure if the truck even supports this.

2. I'll replace the radio soon with a more modern unit. Will I need a wiring harness?

3. I get about 14 mpg in city and 18 on the highway. Does that seem low? I'm about to replace all of the spark plugs to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance!

Answers.

1. Does your Sport Trac have a keypad on the drivers door? If not, then I don't think it is equipped for a keyfob remote. Looking at the 2008 Brochure is looks like keyless entry was an option. My 2009 has the keypad as well as the remote entry.

2. To replace radio, you will need a wiring harness. I suggest purchasing from Crutchfield, who will include your harnesses.

3. My 2009 4x4 is getting between 15 and 16 around town, and 19-20 on the road.

Thank you for the reply! Yes my ST has a keypad on the door. I'll try a fob and let you know what happens.

Check on YouTube for programming FOBs yourself. I just programmed a few for my Mountaineer and the process is simple. I bought the FOBs diry cheap off of ebay. Also, if you have two working keys then I suggest programming one or two more. Once again you can buy blank keys dirt cheap off ebay and have them cut at a hardware store. Don't believe the people who tell you they can't cut the keys because I found a small hardware store that did it for a couple of dollars per key. Look on YouTube for a "how to" video. You will need two working keys in order to program others. It is good to have extras in case you lose a key or one stops working. If you only have one key it costs anywhere from $50-$100+ to get a second key made.

I went ahead and bought a basic fob from Oreilly Auto Parts. Followed the instructions for programming and, voila! It works!!!

Good deal! Enjoy your Trac! Most of us really love these rigs.
