Recently acquired my 96 Explorer 2 Door 4x4 Sport, 156, new tires, new egr, new plugs/wires, battery, hell the A/C even works.

I have a few questions.

1. SURGING IDLE - I have no check engine lights. Idle surges low between 600-900, bogging way down, but never stalling. Runs fine while driving, just when stopped does the problem arise. I am going to purchase the IACV, but lets say that doesn't fix it, what else could be the issue?

2. Trans fluid - It is dark... VERY DARK... but does not smell burnt... I know what burnt clutch packs and burnt trans fluid smell like.. This smells like nothing... Its the original trans too. Ride it out or flush it?

3. Oil - Does this take 5w-30 Standard or 5w30 Synthetic? I <3 Mobile1.

4. Brake lines - I hear the brake lines like to rust out in the rear (Hard lines) Would I be safe to say spraying some header paint on them wouldn't be a bad idea?

5 Exhaust - I want that low growl tone.. What should I do to achieve it.. I am already looking at Magnaflow 44's, but anything else?

Here she is! I love it, I got a kick ass deal for $1300. Those brand new A/T tires sold me.

I had the first issue and an new IAC valve fixed it (clean it didn't work).
Trans fluid - in another car (Ford), I had the same problem. I did drop the transmission pan and replace the filter and filled with new fluid - no flush, just added. It did help with color and changing gears and didn't "distrub" nothing inside. Sure, it was a gamble :)
Oil - Go with Ford one or one that has that specific Ford certification on it. I did try on mine Castrol "High Mileage" one (that doesn't have that) and pressure at hot idle was really bad... granted, I have some problems as it is with oil pressure. Now I use synthetic.

1300$? I hate lucky guy's :)

Flush the tranny, find a BG dealer and have him do it.Should cost around $150 for ATF or $200+ for synthetic ATF.It wont hurt the tranny,I used to do this procedure myself and had my 2000 done with 175000 on it.

If the tranny quits after a flush it was on deaths door to begin with.:D
