First, my plan is to regear my X to 4.10. I'm aware that I need the Ford 8.8 gears for the rear, but I'm not sure about the front. Second, are there any downsides to the regearing? What will I be loosing in returen for the added power? Thanks for your help.

I think you are asking about the Dana 35 front diff. Any gear shop will know what gear set to give you. I would order from 4wheelparts or Randy's or West Coast Diffs because of their warranty and reputation. The only downside to regearing lower is loss of gas milage, unless you plan on running larger tires then it's about equal.

You will also need to have the speedo recalibrated.

I'm not going to be ordering them from a shop, I'm looking to get them on eBay or something inexpensive like that. So I should get dana 35 gears for the front even though the axle really isn't a dana 35?

I should have my 4.10s with LS up for sale in a couple of weeks. I don't know if my LS means my carrier is different or not or if it would bolt right in to your differential. I have my 4.56s and NoSlip on order. Hopefully I can get them installed next Friday.

I have found 4wheelparts about the same price as eBay with free shipping and lifetime warranty. Your center section is a Dana 35. I think it is standard rotation but you'll have to verify by looking under your truck. Robert reminded me of something: The carrier might have to be changed for lower gears, depends on your factory gears. The LS replaces the carrier so that would be a bonus for you.

Huh? I'm not sure which diff I have (the open or the LS). Explain please

Robert said he would be selling his 4.10 gears with a LS. A carrier is the chunk of iron the ring gear bolts to and also hold the spider gears. Hence "the carrier". A Limited Slip like most locking differentials replace the carrier. Some axles have different carrier sizes depending upon gear ratio.

91-94 Explorer front ends are Dana 35 reverse cut

95-2001 Ex front IS a Dana 35 IFS. It takes D35 standard cut gears.

I wouldn't buy gears on ebay, etc. spend the couple extra bucks and get good quality gears. check out 4 Wheel Parts or Randy's Ring and Pinion

Actually 91-94s are reverse cut. I can't speak for 95+ though.
