Does anybody happen to have measurements of a Ford 300 inline 6 cylinder? I am thinking it is roughly the size of a 302, however I think it might be taller.

The thing is, I have a 93 Explorer with a well worn 4.0. I have a rebuilt 300 that I planned on putting in a 79 Bronco, but have decided to put the Bronco build on an indefinite hold.

I have no idea if its possible, but was just wondering if anybody has heard of something like this being done. I have heard of an explorer or two with a Cummins (cant remember if it was a 6 cylinder or not). If thats the case, I think the 300 could be made to fit.

Before anyone starts bashing the 300, just let it be known that you won't change my mind. I love the Ford 300! ;)

Somebody here in in the process of that right now. Search around for the thread, I don't remember the username.

Perfect. I am just heading out right now, I will try and find it tonight.

I was also thinking about doing the 300 inline 6 swap for the torque

here is what i found from another post...

Hey shut up...

I'm in the planning stages of this right now. There are no kits. In fact, to my knowledge, NO ONE has ever swapped a 4.9L (300) into a Ranger/Bronco II/Explorer. You *might* be able to get away without cutting the front wall or firewall if you run an electric fan, but I wouldn't bet on it. It's a tall engine too, I'm probably going to have a custom hood made of fiberglass to clear it. I'm also lengthening the front end to clear it. I'm going to be honest, this project is going to be a real money pit, and will take a lot of blood, toil, tears, and sweat. My suspension plans include coilovers, so what I'm going to do is build the engine cage to mount the coilovers in such a manner as to allow me to mount the radiator further forward. Even with this and the serpentine belt assembly, I may not be able to run a mechanical fan. As far as trannies go, I have an auto, and I like having an auto, so I'm going for a Lentech AOD. Any tranny that will fit a SBF will fit the inline-six. Good luck on the swap if you choose to try it.

I hope that helps..

Here's the current thread:

Added info:
Oh, and as far as a Cummins it is theoretically possible. Ungodly expensive, but possible. I found a guy who did a complete write up on putting the 4BT in his Ranger. I think it was on therangerstation.com?. Anyway he did it for a project at his tech school, took 2 years. It was beautiful when it was finished but I think he said he had around $10,000 in the swap all done...:(

if you go for this, keep us updated. i have a 300 .... from the same truck im looking to sas from. I think this would actually be a great idea as the ford 300 is like legendary !!! lets do it ! :)

The 300 is an insanely great engine. For years, I dreamed about taking it out of my old F250 and put it into my Ranger.

300s are way longer than a 302. I have a 300 on my f150. I will get a physical outside measurement of lenth if you want but its not going to fit with out some very serious surgery on the sploder.

Think of it like this, a 302 is a V8, meaning it's only 4 cylinders long, and the cylinders each have a 4" bore. The 300 is an INLINE six which too has a 4" bore. so in thery the 300 should be about 150% the length of the 302, meaning add 2 more cylinders in length to the 302 that will be about the length of the 300.

OK, curiosity got the better of me. Kind of hard to measure in the truck but the engine is appox 34" long from the back of the block where the trans bolts up to the front edge of the water pump pulley. And height from bottom of oil pan to top of intake is 32-33" high (1996 4.9 EFI).

Thanks for the info. Maybe its best if I leave the engine in the Bronco... I see this taking way too much time and money. :D
