Please help !!!! My Explorer has suddenly lost all interest in power and developed a huge noise from the airbox area under acceleration. I have done the following to no avail

New exhaust
New Cats
New O2 Sensors (2)
New air Filter
New Plugs
Cleaned and changed Maf
Cleaned EGR
Cleaned IAC

It will accelerate gradually if I put a feather on the throttle, but any harder and it just seriously bogs down. I am out of answers. I have scoured the Forum, which is how I have come to do most of the above, but to absolutely no avail. It is no different. I am now really concerned that the timing may have slipped, however that seems to have contradicting reports.
I have no Engine Light on at all, and everythng is code reading OK.
Please please tell me what t do next. I am going crazy

Bad coil pack, or wires is possible. Also may be a trans problem.

maybe running a little rich?...try restetting the computer and see what happens after it re-learns the settings.

Did you test any of the item you replaced? it would be worth running some diagnostics. You probably could have saved a few hundred on parts by purchasing a haynes manual and a multimeter. It could be as simple as a grounding problem, if the computer is not getting good power all sorts of bad things can happen. Before you replace your coil pack run an ohms test on it to see if it's bad.

To me it sounds like a fuel delivery issue, have you checked fuel pressure at the rail? it could be a dirty filter, or a bad FPR (fuel pressure regulator) etc...

A vacuum test will tell you a lot about the state of an engine as well. It will eliminate the big problems.

There are many things that could cause this.

97 Explorer, what engine, what transmission, how many miles

I would start by checking the fuel pressure, a simple test

QUIT throwing $$$ at it

It could be alot of things, I am leaning towards a fuel delivery issue or a clogged cat converter.

Is the check engine light on????????????

i agree with 410. possibly even a blocked fuel filter....

How can I check the fuel pressure and where is the location of fuel filter and fpr.
Thanks.

Trevor

The fuel filter is on the driver side frame rail under the truck. The FPR (if your truck has one) is located right before the return line from the fuel rail to the tank. Some models do not have them, but I think 97 did.

Fuel pressure is checked at the fuel rail there is a fitting to connect a tester, that looks like an air fitting on a tire. Some models have more than one.

for power you need air fuel and spark. any weird valve train noise? that could prevent air inflow dropped spring collasped lifter? or fuel you need to check to both if spark is good check, spark tester available for rent at your local auto parts store if confirmed spark on all six then it is a fuel issue check fuel delivery at the injector unplug harness at individual injector while engine is running check for voltage it will seem like an ac signal seeing as how the computer will be sending an on off signal to activate the coil in the injector if power confirmed at all six by the way as you unplug each injector to test listen for motor sputter if sputters them everthing is working ok because as you unplug each then the cylinder affected will be temporarily dead as it is recieving 0 fuel if no change then you already have a dead cylinder which is easy to locate if you know what to look for if not contact me we can talk jd3403@hotmail.com if you have power at all six by way of multi meter then look at injector spray as determined by engine running and pulling injector out and judging spray ive done this before quite messy but efficient at diagnosis you must understand that your engine operates on three principles air fuel ignition. all three, full power. missing one will notice. easy to fix.

you may also want to run a vacuum test, it will tell you all sorts of usefull details about the condition of the engine.

what was wrong?

turnbulltj did you ever find out what was worng with it? mine is doing the samething.

Ended up being the inevitable timing. Recon engine with new timing gear and a £1000 quid later and everything is just fine again . Still worth it though.
