Why is it that by changing the chip in your X you create such gains, at the same time why didnt they come like that out of the factory? If it is such an improvement why didnt they put it in themselves???

well, most chips require a higher octane fuel. THe average grocery getter doesn't need more power, so having to pay an extra 10 cents a gallon (especially when its as high as it is now!) would be a major turnoff. Plus the more powerful they make an engine from the factory, the more people die in accidents and the more lawsuits they are faced with.

So then why is it that cars like the MDX and Trailblazer all have HP in the 240 and 270 range?

well, just taking a stab at this: the MDX is a "luxury" SUV, and no one wants to pay upwards of $50,000 for a luxury SUV and not be able to put your foot and haul a little a$$. and as far as the trailblazer, i think thats a newer SUV, right? well, i think the next generation has more power than the last generation, right?

and, on another note, its not like explorers have 160 or 205-210 horsepower (depending on which engine you have) and every other SUV has like 350 HP; its not that big of a gap.
personally, i think its cool to get a truck like an explorer (which i would rather have than any other SUV on the market) and make it different than all other explorers on the road.

look at it this way, if all SUV's had the same HP and torque, theyd all be the same.

just my $0.02 USD

Why didn't Ford use BFG over Firestone?? Why didn't ford put a lift kit on the Explorer?? Why didn't ford add a blower to the explorer?? Simple......Everybody is going to use the explorer for a different reason. You may use it to go 100 mph down the track. I may want to go 100 mph through the desert. Still another may want simply to drive around town. While the chip does work it's fords job to make a SAFE and reliable car that serves the needs of the buying public, and they did. If you wish to add an aftermarket part that is up to you. People that buy sports cars buy them with the performance in mind, not everybody buys an explorer for that reason. On top of that by adding a chip ford would need to increase the sticker to pay for the parts. Would the average person who wants to drive around town(majority of the owners) daily wish to pay extra for something they really don't need.

That's really opening a can of worms! How many things do people have on their cars that they REALLY need? .....Heated seat, memory controls,..... I do believe that things like ABS or safety glass are needed. The afore mentioned items are creature comforts. But, like Lee said, the company produces something that appeals to most consumers or adds the things that most people are willing to pay for and let's the consumer go from their. I don't think most people would want to pay for 91 or 92 octane fuel just to get a few more ponies from their motor. And if the sports car consumer was worried about paying for higher octane fuel or mileage, they wouldn't have a sports car.

Umm, well... I do. I have a performance car that get 92 gas all the time. Then I have the X. I bought the X for towing, & a little off roading. It will never be in the same performance class, but I can do what I need to make it a little faster. I'm crazy, but gas prices don't matter much to me. If I pay $1.60 for 87, or pay $1.90 for 92 it's the same to me, but like I said i'm crazy. :)

well that would put you in the minority, and no one makes vehicles for the minority, without having to pay lots for them.

You want the simple truth? :bounce:
Auto manufacturers have to meet this lovely thing called emission and fuel consumption standards. If it were up to Ford do you think they would build them the way they do? Blame it on the government and the tree hugging fascists! :nono: :shoot:

AMEN COWBOY!!!!:D
