ok few months ago we bought a another trans and put in, worked fine then one day the reverse wouldnt fully engage, we tore it apart only to find the spring for the reverse band was misisng on the actuator. well since it was out we checked all the clutch packs all was fine and replaced one band on the OD. mind you we didnt remove any seals excpet just the oens to take the insides loose. got it back in.. hopes were up. it now goes in all gears but drag's, lil more info on how i eman, you put it in reverse.. slow kicking in.. but it engages.. but soon as you let off it feels like it's slipping then grabs and hold's the truck like some one has a brake on, forward.. it seems to go better with selected in OD then drive.. and putting in L1 it dont seem to grab much. im thinking some thing just need's adjusted but its a pain in the but for me to pull that transmission seeing as im partialy handcaped. could it be a band adjustment? we did adjust them (my brother in law) but haynes manual had no spec's so we put em about 10 - 12 lbs . help? :shoot:

Removing the spring on the low/reverse servo is a trick that is used to give the piston a little more force when pressure is low because of leaking seals. The main culpret is the low/reverse piston O ring and there is an improved replacement for itthat has a double lip. Reverse (requires the highest pressure) is made up from the low/reverse band and the high clutch. From the sound of things, someone has allready tried everything they can with the low/reverse and the problem may be seal leakage in the high clutch.

10-12 INCH pounds or foot pounds ?

The adjustments are snug(10in.lbs.), then backed out a certain number of turns. Chris, how far do you back out the two bands? I had done my 5R55E recently(TransGo calls for just enough to turn the output shaft(3/4 turn), and needed to try something for my 91 Explorer.

My 91 still has a slipping feeling when hot. Now that it hasn't been driven in three years, the front seal leaks a little when hot. Do you think a general rebuild would be worth the trouble?

Chris is good with A4LD's, try to listen to him, and good luck,

Don it's 2 turns backoff on the bands. I think a common primary failure on old A4LD's that have a lot of miles on them is the OD band slipping and generating a lot of heat. I'd suggest you try and adjust that band to squeeze a little more life out of it. The actuators DO wear and what was once 2 turns off may be 2-1/2.

And as for a rebuild, you know me, I am the Animal shelter for A4LD's.

well thats the ting.. lols i had to go for surgery and wife needed it finished.. i am able to work on it on a bench (customized) and the reverse actuator was stick ing in the body, thats why i replaced the spring seeing as it had none. as for the torque in ft or inch .. not sure brother in law's a truck driver time i got home he was on the road. and i been thinking all he has is a inch torque wrench. not sure. i love the explorer.. and tbh im not a die hard ford fan but i'v learned to love this thing. just need it mobile. i will have some one double check the bands trq soon. thanks.. will keep you guys updated. ;)
