Does anyone know if I can safely take out the adjusting screws and replace them with new ones (if I can find them..any help here?)

The reason I am asking this is because the screws are rusted pretty good and I cannot get the lock nut to back all the way off. I am going to try a dremel with a wire wheel attachment and clean the threads with that but if that doesn't work then what? I don't want to take the adjusting screws out for fear something on the inside will drop out of place or something like that. Am I correct with that assumption? I am doing this with the tranny in the truck. I have new lock nuts to put on so that is the reason for trying to get them all the way off. How reliable would it be just to use the old ones and adjust the bands and call it a day?

Thanks,
Bob W.

You should not remove the screws, the adjusting bolts engage anchor ends which will fall.

I had a similar issue on my 99 x, I hit it with penetrating fluid and wire brushed the threads and then ran a spare nut up and down the thread. If you have a die then running that up the thread as far as you can get might help.

For a 91 truck, it would be a good idea to use a new nut.

I was thinking of using a die on it...it should get 2/3rds of the exposed threads. Thanks for the tips.

New nuts are something I am strong proponent of. (I am not going there !) If you cannot find them PM me and I can send ya a couple for a couple bux plus postage.

I have the 2 nuts already, I was hoping to find new adjustment screws. I can't seem to locate them anywhere. I tried Axiom and TransmissionPartsUSA but nothing...they might have them but I can't find them.

Anyone have any ideas? The 2 that are on there now are pretty rusted and should be replaced.

In Sacramento there is a shop that dismantles old trannies and sells parts. They seem to do a brisk business with transmission Rebuilders in town, and I doubt they are unique.

Thanks, I am going to check with the dealer tomorrow and if that doesn't work then I will be going to the local tranny shops. If I have to go this route then the whole tranny is getting rebuilt. I just won the C-3 tool set on ebay along with the seal & bushing tools. All I need now is the clutch pack compressor.

I have been checking EBay for one of those sets for a while, and didn't see any. Whenever they have a set, it is usually missing pieces, or gets bid up very fast.

There is one up there now but its missing the servo tool. The set I just got is 100% complete and looks hardly used. I got it for $46.00...not bad considering the cost of the individual tools. I also got the Rotunda set that has the rear seal tools for the A4LD for $9.99....Some guy put up about 200 Rotunda sets last week from a Ford dealership that went out of business and no one was bidding on the stuff.

"nuts"

Found the link Brooklyn Bay had posted for the band lock nuts. Thanks.....USA is the GREATEST...:us::salute::thumbsup:

Nuts are .75 cents.........shipping ..$9.00.. USA is the GREATEST

should the bands need adjusting other than when replaced? I was told that the solenoid or servo kept the tension on them can't remember which, it's been a while

Bands have been known to go 150,000 miles without adjusting. The bands are not like brakes where they change size due to friction.... they are a wet environment.

Can band adjustment be necessary? Yes. Is it a routine thing? No.

id say if they have to be adjusted its just a temp fix to get you by in my book other than that with the screw issue I wouldnt take them out unless you are readdy to rebuild the tranny as for the screws P.B. catylist the best stuff out there by far
