Hello everyone,

My best friend has a 94 x, and loves it by the way, and he and another mechanic both told me the A4ld was originally a mustang transmission, beefed up a bit. It that true or just an "urban legand".

Thanks guys
Geoff

i dont think so..... i do know that the older aerostar minivans and some of the older rangers used the same tranny as a 4 clyinder mustang... but i am pretty sure it isnt the a4ld

according the the guy who sells trannys on ebay the a4ld will bolt right in a to the older 4 cyl mustangs and rangers bronco II's if this is true then i hope its been beefed up to handle the 4.0 but i would believe that it hasnt now that im on my third tranny in 100k

I'm not 100% sure, some people here will, but I think the A4LD was derived from the C4 tranny, which was an old Ford tranny. I do not know which vehicles had the C4. I think early Rangers and BII's did though.

I don't know about 4-cyl Mustang trans. The 83-85 SVO Mustang had some power (it was a turbo'ed 4-cyl) but I don't know what transmission it had.

I am not sure guys, but that could help explain the weekness of the A4ld. I was just wondering b/c that seems silly to put that tranny in a 4000+ lb. truck, but who am i to say that. Ford are the professionals, supposedly.

I heard the A4LD was a version of the tranny that went into Taurus's.

just went to ebay to confirm what i said according to phoenix tranny the a4ld came in the 2.3 mustangs 85-89 the t-bird turbo coupes most every ranger and bronco II with a auto and the aerostar minivans and of course our gen 1 ex's I personally think this tranny would best be used as a lawn ornament

A4LD was never derived from a C4. i cant remember, but its was some weak 3spd. behind early ranger's? maybe?

a trashed C4 will handle alot more power than a new A4LD.

NONO! Front-wheel drive trannies, and rear-drives are compeltely different, trust me. The Taurus has always used the AOD based transmissions. It started with the AOD, then the AOD-E which was electronically shifted instead of a TV cable, and then went onto the AX4S and AX4N. The Taurus and Explorer trannies share NOTHING in common to my knowledge.

Btw, you think the A4LD is bad, try the AX4S for a day :p

The A4LD was derived from the early Ford C3, and was used in the 86 up Bronco II, 2.3L Mustang and Turbo T-Bird, along with Aerostars. Maybe some others. It's been upgraded over the years, but is basically the same design.

What I can't figure out, is why my 92 Mustang A4LD was made in Japan, and the 5R55E in my X was made in France?

I always thought that the Mustang V-8 used the 4R70W like in the V-8 Explorers?

Then again, Mustang uses an Essex 3.8...hmm. Only 3.8 machine I know of by Ford is the Windstar and Taurus, and those are both FWD and use an AOD-based tranny.

The V8 mustangs do use the 470w transmission, just like our V8 explorers do. Its the same guts, but a different tailshaft (for AWD) and a different bellhousing. the 5.0 Mustangs used the old TV controlled AOD automatic, the 4.6 mustangs use the electronic 4r70w. (FYI: the 4r70w is also known as the AOD-EW)

 The same AOD used in the FWD Taurus?
