Does the gear selector on the A4LD trannys come off ? I am talking about the piece the shifter cable hooks on to.
I am trying to install a B&M shifter, and need to make a custom gear selector piece, or take the chance of modifying the piece on there, and having it not work out the way I had planned. Thanks for any help.

Hi and welcome, if i remember when I last had my dash apart, you can take it out of the cluster but it's a PITA

This piece has nothing to do with the dash assembly, it is on the outside of the tranny itself.

Here is the picture of the piece I am talking about.

To install the B&M shifter, I either need to make a custom gear changer piece, or make a custom piece to attach to my shifter cable and slide over and stay on the pin on the stock gear changer.
Another thing I would like to know is, how do you remove the cable from this bracket in the picture below.

Squeeze those two plastic ears with a pair of pliers then you can take that out of that notch in the bracket

The manual control external lever in the photo below connects to the gear selector assy via the shifter cable assy (yellow tube).

This manual control external lever is a part of the shift shaft assy shown in the photo below.

You can see that the shift shaft assy goes into the innards of the 4ALD and parts must be removed to removed this assy.

The shift shaft assy can be removed as discussed in the following link and the reference links shown in this link.

kovak, I have more photos and information about this area of the 4ALD tranny, if you need......

Excellent pictures with a lot of useful information! Axlegrease, I had an unanswered question in the link in post # 6 about the tool you made. I would appreciate if you could update that thread for me. Thank you!

Thank you all very much for the great information. I see messing around with the manual control lever is a bit too much work, so, I think making a piece to thread onto the B&M shifter cable would be the better route.

I got this shifter and cable out of a 86 Ranger with a 302 in it, that has since became a parts truck. The tranny on it had a manual lever on it that accepted the cable end pictured below. There is a hole in the lever that piece would go through, and had a cotter pin securing it there.

This picture below is a picture of the cable. The bracket on there was the one connecting it to the rangers transmission. It will not work for my A4LD, so I am assuming I could rig up the bracket to work that is already on my A4LD.

And below is a picture of the shifter itself, with out the boot on it.

I made a sketch up of the shifter piece I could fab up. I havent thought of a way to secure it to the lever though.

Another thing I just thought of, is there any wiring I would have to do, such as back up lights or anything.

I have come to the conclusion that there isnt many, if any that has put this type of shifter in an Explorer. I havent found any pictures or write ups on the net with one yet.

Thank You for adding pictures to your thread! You just helped me a ton! I am new to working on trucks and the picture let me know that what i was thinking was correct.
