A4LD Input shaft

Sorry for the bad picture but my camera isn't the best.

Is this normal on the A4LD input shaft? The bottom end of the splines are like its either worn or left over from the spline machining process. I thought it was worn so I picked up another one (used) and its actually worse. Both ends look like this. Just wanted another opinion.

yea I know. This Kodak is horrible for closeups. That was the best picture out of the 46 I took. I tried taking pics farther away, close, with and without flash but no improvement...arg!!!

I would like a second opinion though. This weekend I will take it into work and take a picture with the Sony. Thanks anyway.

I'm sitting here looking at the end of a couple of A4LD input shafts and, even interpolating your photo, mine look pretty much just like that.

Thanks Glacier thats what I was hoping for. I just uploaded a replacement image using a Sony camera so everyone can take a better look.

Both ends look pretty much the same. These must be some pretty strong shafts. My converter turbine splines were completely gone and overdrive planetary splines were almost completely gone. I can't even tell it by looking at this shaft. My complaint with my A4LD was that I had lost all forward and reverse.

I could now see the picture. How did you manage to get it to come out clear? Was the torque converter's hub eaten up? The front pump, and bushing inside of the bell housing might have to be replaced. Did you experience any leakage from the front seal?

It was taken in macro mode using a 5 megapixel Sony Cybershot we have at work. It picks up dirt particles I have a hard time seeing by eye. I even reduced the quality by 20% for web viewing. I have to get me one of these!!!

I looked at the pump and bushing and they looked fine to me. The converter hub and bushing was even all the way around. The front seal was bone dry when I took it apart too.

I am replacing everything in the overdrive unit except the outer ring gear and sun gear. The star washer was eating into the overdrive drum and actually looked like it was skipping past the lugs. Other than the overdrive hard parts the only other part I am replacing is the sun gear drive shell. It had too much play for my tastes. This tranny looked pretty good other than this. If I were a poor man I would say I could reuse the clutches and bands they were in such good shape. The fluid was still red and nothing other than slight traces of metal in the pan.

I want to thank you guys for all the help whether you realize it or not. I have been lurking in here for the last few weeks reading all the valuable info here. Other than waiting for my CZ overdrive servo piston and cover I have all the parts other than a new converter and will start the reassembly process.
