I haven't found this one on the forums -- We just replaced the engine in a 1991 EX, and now the A4LD is leaking between the transmission and transfer case.

We pulled the transfer case off to see if we could have left a rag in the back of the tranny, but it was clean. When we pulled the t-case it dumped probably a quart of fluid.

I checked the dipstick with the engine off & it read high, so we thought it was probably just overfilled. We started it up and checked it & the dipstick was bone dry.

Any ideas what might be going on? The transmission is a Ford Factory Rebuilt and was not having any issues. The only change is we removed & replaced it.

Not personally experienced on early Explorer, or A4LD, but normally, the transmission output shaft is sealed by it's own seal, and the transfer case input shaft has it's own seal, also. Could one of those seals be left out? imp

The A4LD 4 wheel drive doesn't have a rear seal. It has a drain hole back to the transmission, but that appears to be clear.
