Ok. I have a 1993 Ford explorer that I put a A4LD out of a wreaked one in because the original had lost all gears and could only be moved while the Explorer was in 4wL.

Yesterday I was driving at about 50mph and pressed the gas enough to cause it to downshift and at that point I noticed the RPM's rise abnormally. The transmission had slipped. Shortly after that I caught a red light and when I went to pull away I had nothing. Not first, second, drive, OD or reverse. I put it in 4wL to see if that could get it to move and it didn't help. Fluid is smells fine and is at the correct level. I have put more then 500 miles on this since I put the 'new' transmission in. It was shifting and driving perfectly before this incident.

So I get it towed. After I get it off the back of the truck I start it and try it again and it goes into drive and I was able to pull it into a parking spot. I try reverse and that worked also. However, when I placed it back in drive it was gone again.

I plan to drop the pan tonite or tomorrow to see if there is any evidence of it self destructing.

Can anyone give me any hints on what I may want to look for? I just find it odd that it isn't making any noise. If the pump was bad or the filter was clogged then it would whine right?

:Edit:

Forgot to add that you can feel it engage into drive and reverse. At first I thought it might be the transfer case but then it wouldn't stay still in park.

the fact that it would move again after sitting for a while sounds like fluid problems/most possibly a clogged filter. dropping the pan and looking for any debris is what I would do first.

while you're under the vehicle with the pan off, check to see which front (OD) band you have. the split kind came in the tranny, but it could have the one piece band if it has been replaced. Glacier's sticky on the A4LD rebuild will show how to tell the difference.

the reason that I'm asking this is so you can adjust the bands while you are under there. you will need to know which OD band you have to properly adjust it. please borrow or buy an inch-pound torque wrench to properly torque the bands during the adjustment.

while you have the torque wrench, the valve body bolts could be checked/torqued, too.

Fluid level is full and I will check the band when I drop the pan.

I have been reading this forum since I got this explorer. Thanks for the welcome.

I hate to ask an offensive question, but you ARE checking the fluid with the engine running , warm and in park, right?

Welcome to this forum! It might have bad O rings on the filter. Did you check the fluid level to see if it's full?

Hello

As Brooklnbay wrote check those O rings out. On my B2 I found out after I cooked it that one of the O rings didn't seat properly.

Sorry to take so long to reply but I just let the explorer rest in my back yard for a year. Going to have the first A4LD rebuilt at my work(dealership that has a ford line) for a pretty cheap price. That will give me a warranty so I don't have to worry about it anymore. I will take the old one apart and let you know what I find. I know I hate reading through a thread with a similar problem only to find it never got resolved.

This exact thing happened to me a couple days ago, to a T.

Any luck?
