Howdy there first time poster long time reader I am in need of some help in an area that is far from my knowledge wheelhouse.my question is in regards to my 1994 xlt 4x4 explorer A4LD transmission and i have found many posts much like my issue but none exact yet. its the same old story of trans fluid in vacuum line to modulator and improper or no shift i replaced the modulator topped off the fluid and it was worse so i bought another one and installed it i bought a cheapo the first time and motorcraft the 2nd time. tried adjusting it clockwise and counter clockwise. unsure of which way ended up working best but still was not right it would shift if i ran the rpms up real high and let off the gas i could get a shift from 1 to 2 then the higher gears most of the time would shift but still a little high on rpms then after a few weeks i had to let off the gas to shift each gear and sometimes it would drop down a gear randomly. it got worse and worse as time went on then one day i went to pass a car and was in high gear and i put the pedal down and it downshifted to first and rpms went way up close to the red. was still drive-able but still not right. i continued driving like this for a month or so running the rpms up to around 3k and letting off and would shift once got back down to 1200ish then one day i hopped in and it would not shift out of first no matter how i ran the rpm up and dropped them on a cold start and i smelt trans fluid was a small amount underneath but nothing major it seemed so i let it set the last couple months figuring was going to need a new transmission i had to jump the battery today so i figured i would run it down the road see if anything had changed and it was shifting again, not properly but as it was before running up to around 3k rpm and letting off. and for a bit more info i do have the pin in the modulator but it appeared slightly bowed in the center could that possibly cause an issue also it had been pryed on and the bracket that holds the modulator was slightly bent but it seemed to seat fine and hold firm. just trying to get my old girl back on the road i have read about having to readjust the bands when a new modulator is installed sometimes but im no transmission guy im a mechanic by trade but i am pretty well behind the curve on transmissions insides and workings. also it was unable to manually shift with the shifter any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you for your time!

Did you install the pin from the old modulator?

Sometimes people dont know its there and it will be missed or it falls into the drain pan and gets lost.

Use a small nail or piece of coat hanger if you need to make one.
