I need to know if it is possible to use an A4LD from a 2.9 on a 4.0. I want to use the tranny from an 87 Bronco II in my 93 Explorer if I can. They are both 4 wheel drive. Please let me know if this is possible, and mods I would have to make, if any. Thanks.

It will fit but...

They should bolt up fine, BUT the 4.0 trans was updated quite a bit to take the power of the 4.0. I dont have the update book handy, but numerous internal changes were made to the trans to handle the increased power. The changes took place in 90-93 and the biggest was the increase to the 6 pinion OD planet, and the 6 pinion dirct planet was from from 4 pinions? I believe. I think the VB went to 2 solenoids at that point also but not sure. Other changes I just cant remember them without a reference.

If you plan to rebuild it before installation, check to make sure you can update the internals- at that point it will most likely make more sense to get the trans from a 4.0 that already has the updates.

Good Luck.

If you are comfortabe with transmission removal

There is no reason for you to not try a rebuild of your current transmission. There are a number of internal changes to handle the 4.0L and many problems in the OD section can be repaired quickly and at low cost. There is just no reason to put another used transmision in. The procedures can be found on this thread located at:

12/6 Under the Hood, Anybody rebuild an A4LD

So what is the problem with the current transmission?
