1994 Ranger XLT 4.0 A4LD
Good morning, I have been reading and learning on this forum for a while. I have a 94 Ranger 4x2 XLT with a 4.0 and the A4ld transmission. I have some questions on the Torque convertor and clutches for the A4ld with the 3.0 vs. the 4.0 engine. Are the torque convertors and clutches the same for both engines? I know that the bell housings are different, but are the internals the same? Full transparency, I bought this from a coworker knowing the tranny was weak. I had previously rebuilt an Accord and Civic auto tranny successfully, so I figured that it was a good deal and I would rebuild this one. He told me that it was a 3.0 engine so I rebuilt it with a 3.0 kit and torque convertor. The clutches wont pull, it will barely move on level ground. Turns out it is a 4.0. I'm kicking myself for not checking, but I thought he knew what he had.
Would the wrong kit and convertor cause this or did I do something else wrong? Thanks in advance for the help!

Yes. Pulled easy back to the concrete where I am working on it.

Thank you. I have been looking thru Glacier991's posts on pressure testing. I'm going to start there.

The 3.0 internals are weaker and the stall on the 3.0 torque convertor is 200 rpm higher than the 4.0. If you end up having to pull the transmission, should seriously think about a manual transmission. Since you are 2wd you can use a T5 or a TR3650 as well as the M5OD that was offered in the ranger.
