I've notice when creeping along slow that the shift on my 92 seems to go into neutral between 2nd and 3rd. Ive read the A4LD posts including the rebuils but I think that is beyound me especially being November and no garage.

The front pump seal is already leaking and I expect a rebuild in the not to far future (90k). But; Is there anything that I can get my mechanic to do to help this without removing it ? This O-Ring thing help ?

Have you tried flushing the tranny and doing a filter change?

Do you really have second?

Put it in manual second and see if it feels solid. Sounds like the intermediate band has snapped from what you said. Third would also show up as a problem in reverse.

I just picked up this truck a short while back(87K paid too much- $4k). I have not changed the fluid or filter.

I've put the trans in manual second and it seemed tight. I have no problem with reverse. The trans seems to shift through all gears OK under load. It is only when I pull out slowly and continue at a slow speed(10-20MPH - Very Low Loading) that I feel it let go for a second between 2nd and 3rd.

Just wondering if any work can be done wihtout removal to streach the life a bit till rebuild time.

In some of the documentation I have they suggest a little different intermediate band adjustment for the 2-3 shift. Transgo states in their instructions that 2-3 shift feel is dependant on intermediate band adjustment.

They suggest: loosen for free rotation, then tighten adjusting screw until assembly wont turn with input(turning output shaft) then back off 3/4 turn.

Thats just some info.

Could be the valve body is dirty, or intermediate servo seals are weak. The intermediate servo applies the inter. band (2-3) shift. You could pull the servo and reseal it(I would do the OD at the same time). The servo is near the exhaust so its possible that the seals have hardened and need to be refreshed. You can do it in the vehicle, easiest would be to remove the cat to get access to the servos. (Save time-Just cut the cat pipe bolts and replace them with new stainless fasteners to make next time easier)

Since you just got the vehicle- dropping the pan, cleaning it up, replacing the Low/rev servo seals with the updated, and resealing the O/D and int. servos may not be a bad idea. Days worth of work. 35 bucks in parts plus fluid. You can get the rebuild kit with all the seals you need and more for 25 bucks plus 10 more for a filter.
