I had an opportunity to do some more troubleshooting and I have noticed that the pressure will build to around 160 as I accelerate to around 2500 rpm, and then as if in an attempt to shift into 2nd gear the pressure drops to around 75 psi and remains there unless I continue to give gas and then increases as it would if the transmission was in park or neutral. I still have the problem with a 35 minute delay for forward, but after the transmission has shifted into forward gear, it usually only takes about 6 seconds to engage from park, neutral, or reverse.

Did anybody find the problem? I have a 1994 Mazda B4000 4X4 with the exact same problem.

Welcome to this forum! The slow engagement problem is caused by low line pressure or internal hydraulic pressure leakage.

thanks, what parts can i look into to fix this? would a VB rebuild fix this?

Had the same problem for years. Gradually it would take longer and longer to start driving in the mornings. Reversing was ok. It would help for some time to put more fluid but a bit later the problem would come back. It seems we manege to fight it. Can't say for sure (didn't run it for long so far) but the problem has gone.
It looks like the coz was this:

Possible Source(s):
§ Forward clutch assembly burnt/damaged/leaking. Check ball in cylinder/leaking piston seal rings.

All seal rings on all pistons in all gears were stiff like plastic. You could feel free movement of pistons. No sealing at all. It was the only place we didn't get to 8 years ago when did complete rebuilding. Turned out not so complete, huh? After putting new stuff everywhere (I hope) and assembling it drove forward straight away. No delay even for the fist start. Smooth shifting you can't even feel it. After a couple of days it drove without a delay. I didn't drive it for long so far but the change is obvious.

It's been 10 years after the last post in this topic but I couldn't find the solution anywhere. So maybe someone will find it helpful.

PS Oh, the car is Ford Scorpio 1990, A4LD
