I am ready to re-install the valve body in my 1991 Ranger A4LD with Transgo kit installed. I want to check the two valve body solenoids first. Can I use the truck battery or my battery charger for the 12v supply? Do I do it with the solenoids in the valve body or removed. And then what.
Also, can I use a steel check ball for the 5th ball instead of a plastic one like the other 4 original balls? A friend (?) gave the extra steel ball with some other parts.
Thanks, Tom.

Use the battery and see if they click. This is not a positive test, they can click and still not work right hydraulically.
The steel ball is too heavy and probably won't work right.

ordered solenoids need check ball

Could not get good test on the solenoids, so I ordered new ones. However this supplier, TP USA, was out of stock of the .250 plastic balls.
Does anyone know where I can get some. Just need one!
Thanks, Tom.

Actually you should use a ohm meter to test the solenoids, I forgot to add this before.

solenoid test

Thanks, Pop,

What ohm readings should I get?

Tom.

The CCS is 25 to 40 ohms, I don't have the ohms for the shift solenoid, maybe some one else does. Check the coil for open with the ohm meter.

Pop, You can tell I'm no electrical engineer.
Do you test the solenoids while in the valve body or removed?

Also, Anybody. Where can I get a .250 plastic (or whatever) check ball?

Thanks.

It is 26-40 ohms for both solenoids..

I had to look that up many years ago and that is now stuck in my head along with all the other useless information like g=c800:5.. It just won't go away.. :)

I just spoke to a tech at TransGo, He said steel balls will work so I'm ready to go!
