I got a running driving 93 Explorer for $500. Didn't check it that well because it drove nice and the price was right. Got home and found dirty, slightly smelly trans fluid. Other than the usual things like new fluid and filter plus band adjustments, what sort of things should I be looking for/at to determine if this trans is dead? Once the new fluid is in, how long should I wait for it to foul before assuming it's good?
