So I have a '94 explorer 4x4 4-door with a rebuilt tranny in it.

A few days ago, it started shifting a bit weird. Everything seems smooth except the torque converter seems to lock up too soon. In over-drive, it will try to lock the converter at like 35 mph, which leaves the rpms at only 1000.

In drive, everything seems normal except when I let off the gas to slow down, then put some gas back on. Then it will give me a pretty rough shift into a lower gear.

Other than those two things, there is one other symptom. It's not wanting to downshift it's self for hills. Used to be, at the base of the hill, I could just let off the gas and re-apply it and the tranny would downshift. Now it won't, and under load, it waits way too long to down shift, and usually jumps down 2 gears when it finally does.

My first guess with all of this was that the fluid level was low, (it does leak a little). So, I dropped the pan and did a filter & partial fluid change. This did seem to solve the problem, for the first 2 days at least. Now it's back to the same problems.

Anyways, I hoping someone could help me figure this out. I don't know much about how a tranny works. It seems like whatever controls the torque converter lock/unlock action is acting lazy. I am really hoping it's something easy and stupid...

I haven't seen a vacuum leak yet. And yes, I think this tranny has an adjustable modulator. By modulator, I'm guessing you mean the vacuum diaphragm the manual points out. The re-built tranny has a gear looking knob on the diaphragm, however, it's too tight to turn by hand, so I wanted to double check that I'm right before I grab tools.

How would I adjust the modulator?

Also, forgot to mention this...

The partial fluid change didn't really make the difference I thought it did. After the change, I test drove it at night when the temp was in the 60's. It started acting up again during the day when it was much warmer out. Last night I drove it, and the problem seemed much better again.

The outside temperature seems to make a difference in the symptoms, which makes me think something diaphragm related.

Well, somehow I scared it back into working. All I did the other day was adjust the kick-down cable and remove/re-plug a few vacuum lines to see if there was cracks and/or fluid inside them.

I drove it to work yesterday in the middle of a hot day, and all seemed fine.

Got to love the ghosts in the machine.
