For the past 2 weeks, my 94 explorer xlt has been having difficulty going into drive especialy when cold. Yesterday it went into drive just fine but didnt wont to shift gears. The transmission stop going into forward gears completly when I was at the store. I have replaced the transmission filter and the modulator valve, and still nothing

First check for low fluid level, that is easiest cause of a no-shift in the A4LD

Check fluid level when hot, not on a cold transmission.

when mine did this the clutch bands where fried i just went to pick and pull and got lucky finding a fresh rebuild but remember a4ld is not that strong they are pretty easy to kill

I cannot recommend this enough. Even overfilling helps. I note that mine behaves perfect when slightly overfilled when hot. I've got a small leak and sometimes if I let it go a while, it will refuse to go into D if the weather gets cold. Top it off and all is fine (aside from the leak still existing)!

Check the adjustment of the shift cable. Sometimes the hole in the manual slide valve gets worn, and appears to be egg shaped. This will cause the transmission to be slightly out of gear. There is a repair sleeve to correct this issue so that you won't have to replace the manual slide valve. How many miles does it have?
