My explorer was recently stolen and when it was recovered the ABS light was on. My insurance company had a Ford Dealer check it out and found that it was the Hydraulic control unit that was faulty. The insurance company says that it could not have happened during the theft because there was no external damage to the unit. It looked as if the vehicle had been taken off road and I was wondering if the shock of off roading could have caused something to break inside the unit? Also how common is it for this part to fail?

im not familiar with FORDs yet but those are very sturdy units...

first off they are cast aluminum or steel and dont develop problems frequently. How does the dealer know that the unit is faulty? Did they just run the codes?

you will get and ABS control module code on most vehicles for low pressure, kinked lines, etc...

For your sake i hope you dont have to replce it out of pocket cause they run upeards of 800$ for the part and are a pain to install
