Did a search, found some older Ex's with this problem but not many newer models.
I have an '02 EB Ex with 20k mi. and an '03XLT Sport. 8k mi. Both have the ABS light coming on and staying for days. Ford dealer reset the '02, but within a week it was back on.
Brakes work fine, though I haven't tested the ABS. Both are driven easily, mostly Interstate, no off-road.
Dealer said they have had a few others but no recall.
So far all covered by warranty.
Anyone with similar experience. Anything to tell the dealer.
Thanks,
TW

What code is being set when the light comes on?

I don't have a code reader and I didn't ask the dealer.
Though I've owned 5 Explorers in 10 years I have never worked on one of them other than the stereo.

I have an '02 xlt with the same problem . the ABS light comes on and stays on but usually only in the summer when it is HOT out. Every time I get ready to take it to the dealer it doesn't stay on. My dad also has an '02 but his light almost always stays on , even in the cold.

I have a 98, and the light stays on, it never goes off, Ive been trying to figure it out since the summer..

For the guys with warranty, find a good young tech to read the computer codes at the dealer. ODBII will show what is happening on the intermittents. The guy with the '98, look at the top of the rear axle housing, there is an electric sensor for the ABS there, it get covered with chips and stops working, you can try to clean it, but I would just replace it while I had it out. The light on my '92 sport is on right now, gotta fix my transfer case shift motor first though :)

Ronbo do you know the name of that sensor on the axle? My light came on several months ago as well. Price??

HI, it's called the rear speed sensor, and on fordpartsnetwork.com it's $15.61 for my '92, your mileage may vary :)

In the case of the rear ABS sensor, sometimes simply changing the rear diff fluid and cleaning the sensor will solve the problem. Sometimes not.

well i just had the exact same thing happen to me and I have never had the light come and stay on before.

But there is a good reason for mine! I'be been playing the the 2'+ of snow here in Utah and I believe i got the best of one of my wheel sensors up front. Oh well in the mean time it is fun to play without the ABS just like to good 'ol times.

Try a get it scanned for codes. Autozone and DIY won't have the hi-tech scanner used for diagnosing ABS codes. You might just have to call around and find out if any gargages have the scanner that can read ABS codes. If you lived close enough to me, I would scan the codes for you, I love my new AutoTap diag. scanner.
