ABS Light and new brakes

Its on the top right of the Diff, look for the wire and follow it. Its real tight up there not much room for a hand. Looks like the ABS sensor changed from '03 to '04 if its on the Diff. Mine is an '04 and the right one looks like mine. . .
Did you verify that there are no ABS sensor on each rear wheel???

The shop checked and say that it only has one sensor in the rear diff...looks like this change was made from '03 to '04 meaning yours has TCS...

Haven't had the time to plug this yet because it is too dark when I get home...possibily will do it on saturday morning and let you guys know if my culprit was the freakin' sensor...

Done...they put in the new sensor and erased all three codes c1235, c1235 and c2770...spent all morning today driving and the freakin' abs light is off!!!:D
I will keep my eye on it for the rest of the week and will let you all know if the abs rear sensor definitely does erase these three codes if the x does not have TCS and RSC...

I am happy, for now...

250 miles later it is off...
Conclusion:
02-05nExplorers with only one rear abs sensor at the diff (meaning your truck does not have RSC or TCS) that have abs codes c1235, c1236 and c2770...the culprit can be almost 100% sure that it is the sensor NOT the abs module...so try the sensor first instead of buying the module and spent the big bucks...:salute:

2003 Explorer XLT

Just keeping this old thread up to date.

I too had ABS light come on and off on a 2000 mile road trip. It stayed off for the past 7 months and then on for the last two weeks.

Unfortunately I'm up here in Northwest Canada and we pay a premium for everything. I've read many post where the rear sensor is under $50.00 US, well I paid 79.00 plus taxes for a total of $89.00 CAD. I took the gamble and rolled the dice and bought it without getting a scan done. As many have reported, it is usually the rear ABS sensor and I lucked out, it was!!. It did not clear instantly, I had to roll about 50' for it to clear, I think the ECU needed to see some pulses from it. Anyway, it is easy to change and my light is now off.

For all of you, here are the ford part numbers.

The new Ford Number is 5L2Z-9E731-B
The old Ford Number is 4L2Z9E731AA
Also an old Ford Number 1L24-9E731-AD
The newer sensor does look different than the old, in the part that is inserted into the housing.

Thanks to all of you that contributed to this thread and got me on the right track.

Don

This abs stuff is really getting on my nerves...the part does not fit the explorer...I went to the local Ford dealer and bought one for like $45...the $17 buck version is for the Sport Trac Explorer not for the SUV...I guess that I'll have to send the sensor back to amazon for a refund...the shop is now closed so can anyone help me where can I find the sensor to plug the original and new motorcraft sensor? This should work now!!!

Here is the pic of the incorrect sensor:

Left is the correct size, right is the one received that will not fit...

on the right is the correct sensor, its been updated, and yes it is correct.

those are two diffrent sensors... I thought the one on the left fits the 02 03 .. which differs.. the one on the right fits either the earlier or later models

that pos sensor on the left has been updated twice to two different looking sensors the final fix was the one the right.
