I just went through an abs problem. My prob was a diff nature, but I did learn a few things along the way. I am not sure if it is related with what you where working on or not, ABS is sensitive as heck. Your 96 4x4 wont work with out your ABS working correctly.
Obvious stuff first.
1-check all fuses. 2 in power dist box under hood. 1 in int fuse panel.
2-make sure the connections from the front ABS sensor wire coming from the hub is good. Check the wire itself foe breaks or cuts.
3- you can test the resistance of all three sensors. Rear is on the rear diff.
4- make sure all the connectors were not interfered with. Start with the abs pump, and follow it. The rear follows the frame rail to the front dr side fender. There is a black box tucked into the fender behind the battery. Also a little black box close to the fuel filter, check it as well.
5- reset your gem. Disconnect the battery for 20 mins, start the engine, see if it goes off and stays off.
6- A dirty rear sensor will mess with the system, turning it off, thus throwing the dash light. Remove with a 13 mm and clean the round magnet, reinstall.
If none of this works, you can take it in to a brake shop, and have them read the abs codes. Once you know exactly what it is, you can repair it yourself.
Good luck!
