I have an '01 Explorer Sport. The other day I pulled into a parking lot and went to turn left into a parking spot and stop at the same time. As I applied the brakes, it started braking as normal and all of a sudden it sounded/felt as if the ABS engaged. The braking almost stopped all together. It only lasted for a second or two, but caused me to finally stop about 2-3ft. past where I would have normally. Im scared to even drive the damn thing now, since who knows if the brakes will work when needed. Any ideas what would cause this?

Even if one wheel hits some sand at that speed and starts to slide, the ABS will engage to keep the wheel from locking up.

I get atleast once of these problems every week, mostly on GM's but the fords too.. Remove the sensor without breaking it, plug the hole and file down the rust where the sensor meets the hub

You might want to see if the hub assembly is still good also, I've personally never had a sensor fail by itself.. everytime an ABS issue comes up it's due to the hub assembly failing. Jack up the truck's front end, one wheel at a time and see if there's any play in the wheel at the bearing.

i just have the same problem after changing new hubbearing when you get a chance pull the tire of and take a look it takes 2 bolts to get to it mine was completely covered with wheel bearing grease it fixed it right up

I had/have the exact same problem - 1998 4.0 OHV/Manual Trans 4X4 SPORT - the ABS slightly engaging on dry pavement, when making a sharp right hand turn into a parking lot space at a spirited rate of speed and subsequent decelleration.

After some research here - a few months ago, I removed the passenger side front abs sensor - and it's "face" (two steel rods embedded in plastic) where it senses the raised teeth on the ABS wheel, was pretty heavily covered with clean/carmel color wheel grease.

NOTE: Through normal wear/tear/heat, a small amount of front wheel bearing grease works it's way past seals - hence the issue as the vehicle ages. My memory of this issue first appearing was at about 70- 80,000 miles.

Additionally I shined a mag light down the hole the ABS sensor mounts in, and low and behold the toothed ABS wheel also had grease in almost all of its "lands."

Figuring this wasn't optimum, I wrapped some old t-shirt around a small Flathead screwdriver, turned the brake disc, and for about a half an hour proceeded to remove the grease from all of the toothed ABS wheel lands.

The fix worked for right hand turns, now I have a feeling that I need to do it on the other side, as I'm getting it periodically on left hand turns.

If you take your time, and do a really meticulous job, it'll take you 2 hours total per side.

HTH,
Fast Dave
