My wife's 03 Explorer just started last night to randomly pulse the brakes when it is not necessary. The ABS light is not on, and I have not had time to look at it yet.

Is there a step by step process to troubleshoot the ABS system?

Might be a bad bearing.

I replaced all 4 bearings about a year and a half ago, but I will check and see what they look like. I am wondering about the tone rings and sensors. I am not sure what else can go wrong with this system. When I test drove it today it literally felt like the brakes self adjusted to stop slightly slower...and when I mashed the pedal harder there was a quick jerk to the right, and then it self corrected without me having to turn the steering wheel. I could feel what seemed like ABS pulse when it corrected.

The easiest way is to use a OBD scanner with live data/graphing and pull up each wheel speed sensor to see the signals

+1 . Just had the same issue on an 01 sport and all wheel bearings were tight and no road noise. The LF wheel was reading 2mph slow causing the issue in my case, new hub unit fixed it.

Thanks I'll check it out and update the thread.
