Nothing, first gens use wheel sensors for abs

Isn't that just for the front though? Or are the rears individual in 4WABS systems? I haven't looked at my 1994 that close yet.

If it was me, I'd put it in. It's a lot easier to do it now and prevent ABS issues. ABS is a good thing and by not putting it in, your ABS system will throw a code and disable itself. If you don't like ABS, that's fine but in some states, you can't get tags with that light on. If it's strictly an off-road rig, then it's your call if you want to gut ABS.

First gen diffs (front or rear) do not have a tone ring. Second gen rears do. Removing it does no harm.

My first gen does and the sensor to go with it

Odd, my 94 explorer has no sensor on the diff, I just looked. Also my 94 B4000 doesn't, but that was only front ABS if I remember right. Our 2000 does have the sensor as well as the axle in my garage from a 98 explorer. Either way, the ring is only for ABS on these, and worst case scenario, you won't have working anti lock brakes. That said, there is no reason to not put it back on.

My 1991 has RABS and I had to replace the diff sensor in order to get it working properly. I would imagine they kept that same system in the 1993 & 1994 years but just added front wheel speed sensors, much like the early 90's Chevys. The sensor is up top, kinda hard to see and get to unless you're on your back peeking up near the gas tank.

I had my face right in there. I would at least notice a wire. My ABS never worked in my 94 explorer, maybe its possible someone did what I did to my 98 axle and just capped the hole? Either way we can assume mine is different, and most if not all had the tone ring.

So there is your answer OP, you need the tone ring for ABS, you can remove it without issues, but it will just have standard brakes.
