Abs unit

I have a 96 ford explorer and the abs unit is bad. I have a parts truck that has a good one but after I install it how do I bleed the air out of it ? Thanks Ryan

2 ways: A) Take it in to a shop, that owns the programmer tool for ABS bleeds. B) Redneck rocky road, brake pedal fest.

There is a programed device, that is used to activate the HCU (abs pump). The HCU runs to bleed the air out of it completely. Dealers and some repair shops have this device.
I suggest using this method (A) to bleed a replaced HCU.

I don't think the redneck rocky road, slam on the brake pedal a bunch of times, until the pump bleeds the air out, would work as well. This method can work if you have a few air bubbles in the system, but full replacement? Yeah, not convinced on that one.

Mine bought the farm by main chip burnout. No need to replace pump and tubing, just electronics module. Did that, works, but has ABS light on due to VIN # mismatch.

I don't think forscan can bleed a 96. 4 choices:
-Shop
-A very rare adapter and tool. Probably impossible to find today, and would cost a fortune.
-A used MT-2500, with a newer cartridge. You can set it for a 97. Should be under 100.

-redneck way.. dirt road, lots of abs activation, bleed, repeat :lol:

There is no vin coding.

Not likely. Both are electrical issues, the second being a shorted to ground power relay. Replacement module indicated.

Usually, if the pump unit with all the brake lines sprouting out of it is operational, only the box with all the wires coming out, commonly called "module", may be replaced separately.
