AC for Noobs

sorry guys.. i've spent the last hour or so trying to look up the problem but i'm gettin pretty bored and frustrated..

anyways.. how do i find out what kind of AC my car is running? i'm in an 01 explorer sport and i can't figure out if i'm supposed to use R-134a or r-12.. i've been looking for a manual but i can't find one.. also.. i can't find the cap i'm supposed to use.. i kno it's supposed to have an L on it and it's supposed to be on the passenger side but i can't seem to find it..

please help me out...

It's running R-134a. R12 has been gone for about 15 years.

Someone here has a picture of that low side port... on some vehicles it is blue but on mine I think it's just black. I'll see if I can find a picture for you.

This is the low side port on a 92 Explorer, yours will be in a similar location.
