lat winter i had to remove the ac compressor to do some repairs. all the coolant sprayed everwhere cuz i did not evacuate the system first.and now when i try to recharge it with a at home kit it doesnt seem to take any in. the comp. doesnt cycle now but when i hook a can up to it, it cycles constantly but the can never gets any lighter. did i damage parts when i unhooked it without evacuating the system.? or whats the prob.

Without going into other things you might ought to do, have you brought the system into a vacuum state for about 30 minutes prior to attempting to add the refrigerant?

ps. There is a good thread in the "Useful Threads"forum about AC. Although it is titled "Converting your AC to 134" it really in the final analysis is a how to with pictures and links on how to recharge a system too.

well also if i remember when i went to tech school some 15 years ago.. you have to also well not have to but recommended that you change the DRYER when you opne the system.. i think that is what it is called. it collects any moisture that is in the system.,,

hope i am not totally wrong on that..
just tryong to help..

David, yer right on, that is one of the things I wasn't going to go into. But yes, anytime you have the system open for any appreciable period, the conventional wisdom is to replace the receiver/drier, or as it is called in the fixed orifice systems (FORD Explorer types) the accumulator. Not replace with a junkyard model, but a NEW one, with new dessicant in it. This is all covered in the AC thread in the Useful Threads forum, plus a lot more.

and it is kind of delicate right you have to remove it from the container and not let it sit out in th open too long as it will start absorbing water...

i guess that is not for somene who has never done that before ...

No the accumulator is metal with fittings on it for the refrigerant line. Not delicate at all. The dessicant is welded inside the case.

didn;t mean delicate in that meaning....

i meant as in you can not leave it out in the open for a long time.. cause it is a little sensitive crrect..

I realize it is all metal lines and such..
