I was wondering if there is any way I could find out which type of refridgerant my AC is using. I have a '91 Explorer, which would us R-12, but the compressor was replaced 2 1/2 year ago, so I'm hoping it's been converted to R-134.

r-12 fittings are screw on and r134 is a quick disconnect fitting. good luck

If it was converted, there should be a sticker indicating so. Otherwise, it's probably still R12.

Ok, just checked and there really isn't a sticker indicating any changes. The compressor has a sticker stating that it works with either R-12 or R-134, but it doesn't state which it uses. Nick I wasn't aware of the difference in connectors between R-12 and R-134, I'll have to check that out. Thanks

Somewhere there should be a sticker saying what refrigerant is used and how much.
If not, somone screwed up because it's illegal to install one without it.

My Ex still has the factory R-12 sticker , but the AC tech. added another sticker stating the change to R134a. Look hard for that sticker....

An R134 refill kit will not work on the valves of an R-12. Same other way. That is the easiest way to tell. The valves were made different so there would be no mixing and no confusion. Find an old car with R12, look at the valves and compare it to yours.
I would agree that if any retrofit was made, you should find a sticker.

Good Luck!!!!

Thanks for all the tips and advice. I have a R-134 Kit so I'm going to check to see if the valve fits. I'm also going to search high and low for a sticker.

np, i need to charge mine as well, but i'm too lazy

1991 - IF you are going to convert the system, PLEASE read the thread on converting. It's in the useful threads section!
