97 XLT. I have had this for about a month so some problems are expected and obviously I don't know the maintenance history. I noticed the AC compressor cycling on and off so I knew I would need a repair or at least a freon recharge. Last week my check engine light came on so I stopped at an Advance Auto parts and they ran the code. I don't recall the exact number but it said Evap low or leak. Since I don't know the history I don't want to use the cheap recharge kit. I don't have or know how to use the proper gauges. One thing I find odd is I only see one connector where there should be a high and a low side.

I am going to take it to a mechanic tomorrow. He is open on a Saturday. I was curious if someone could give a little insight about the conditions mentioned so I might be prepared for what he might say is wrong.

It still cools fine other than the cycling compressor and I try to leave it off.

You might want to try the Automotive Air Conditioning Information Forum

They have a lot of A/C guru's there.
All you have to do is go through the usual join procedure...then post your question.
Here is the link...Good Luck

The high and low side ports are on different sides of the engine compartment, and are both covered with black caps. The low side is on the accumulator near the firewall, where the high side port is near the battery.

I think your Check Engine issue has to do with the evaporative emissions control, not the A/C.

I guess I need to confirm that number and description again. Thanks for adding where the high and low ports are.

I did join the autoacforum for the AC questions. I will look around a bit before asking it.

The check engine light did come back on. It was P0455 so you were correct. I checked my gas cap and think it might have been lose. It is cleared again so I need to check better during fill-ups or dig into it deeper.

The AC just needed a recharge.
