I've noticed a musty smell everytime i get in our 2007 Explorer (bought used). It seems only on outside air, not recirc. Where is the filter on this thing. Something is making me sneeze and it smells funky.
I don't know about the newer models. I know that some complaints about musty smells come from moisture accumulating on the evaporator and in the plenum.
I will definitely stay tuned. I found out there's no cabin filter. It only happens during the first few minutes after starting and then goes away (Smells like dirty socks). But something's in there messing my allergies up. I was scouring the posts and found that leaves can get in there and collect moisture?

So it's now obviously mold on the evaporator coils. I've also noticed no condensate draining anywhere under the vehicle. Unfortunately, this also means i've been unable to find the drain line. I think it's between the door and the body on the passenger side but it's pretty high up. Anyway, I fished a wire up it to see if there was a clog, got about a foot up and no result. My wife noticed a gurgling sound today (I hadn't heard this before). So, in the meantime of taking it to the dealer, does anyone know exactly where this condensate drain line is? Should I try to blow a clog out with my air compressor?
I don't have the TSB 96eb96 refers to but AFAIK you have to remove (or at the very least, get to) the evaporator to clean it. I've heard of things you can spray down the A/C air intake but IMO that can't work very well, as the spray would have to travel quite a ways through the plenum first.
i remember someone told me to set my air on vent and to turn the fan all the way to max and then spray febreze or something of the like into the air intake vent where your wipers are and im guessing with the fan on max it will allow the febreze or whatever u spray to circulate the system and help get rid of the smell.
On my vehicles w/out cabin filters I Put the a/c on vent.. and spray lysol into the vents (spray into the inlet which is under the winshield, outside the truck)... When when you have about 3/4 of the can sprayed, turn off the fan and spray some into the vents from inside.. Let it sit a while.. If you got mold in there that will help.. If you got stuff really deep in the system it may not clear it up...
K this is my first post here. I have the same problem with my '05 Explorer, smells like crap while the AC is running. What should I check? Im thinking it's a moldy evaporator, I mentioned it to a dealer when I took it in for a service and they just mentioned spraying lysol down through the system. Is it definitely the evaporator or should I try cleaning my vents first?
