Hi guys,
Just wanted to start off by saying a bit thanks!
I'm an Aussie boy, and the X is quite rare here, so trying to find service/support/knowledge is quite hard. I've done lots of small fixes thanks to your expertise!

Anyway, what i was really interested in asking, was if anyone would have any ideas why my Explorer seems quite sluggish off the line when you floor it? It seems really slow, and then when it hits about 3 or 4 grand it just goes mad! It's a sudden thing, so i've ruled out the tall gearing. A friend who also owns an Explorer complains of the same thing!

Other than that, car runs great guns ;)

IMHO.....it got a 160 hp motor (4.0L ohv) pulling 4K lbs......it ain't gonna go fast......it's the nature of the beast. If you got the 4.0L SOHC, then.....that's a different story......you should be well set w/205 hp.

You could always try a tune up.

Aloha, Mark

I find my worst enemy is the damn floor matt I use, cant put the petal to the floor cause it always slides in the way and its about 1/2" thick too haha.

Id have to agree with ma96782 that a 4.0 pulling 4k lbs.. isnt going to be fast. You can help it by putting in an aftermarket filter (even a K&N drop in).

Isnt the limited a V8?? i i have no idea if they come in the v6 flavor?

What is your axle ratio and tire diameter. You want it to screem off the the line get a smaller tire diameter or higher numerically gear ratio. But beware tires wont last.

When i put a larger throttle body on mine the throttle response and acceleration improved a bit due to more air flow.

I think the Aussie spec is the same as ours so it would be a 4.0 SOHC with 3.73 ls diff.

Try the throttle cable mod. It made quite a difference on mine.

I have an XLT SOHC with 205Hp (153kw/ 304NM) it has a moments hesitation (thats the Physics of shifting 2T), but it leaves most V6 Commodores / cherokees / Falcons / Prado's for dead. Pulls hard from 1000rpm.

Underated truck downunder!

I have a '96 Limited 4.0 OHV w/ 3.73

My diesel truck can out run this thing! I just got the Exp last Saturday. Talking to a mechanic friend he said it is the nature of the beast. 4k w/ 160hp.

I cleaned the TB and IAC last night and there was a big improvement. I plan on new plugs, wires and cleaning the MAF. I am starting to look at aftermarket MAF, TB, intake and headers/exhaust. Not sure if the $$ vs. improvement is worth it for "Mom's soccor mobile"!

Yeah, Howard hit the nail on the head. The Aus spec Explorers all had the 3.73 LSD, and the Limited only came with the 4.0 SOHC here.

I realise that it's going to be a git sluggish due to it's mass, but the reason I ask is because it's not a linear thing. Before about 3 grand, it's dead. Then all of a sudden it comes on really hard. I suspected it was due to the mapping being conservative to meet emission control laws?

Just wondering if anybody else had noticed this too!
Thanks for the suggestions!

Mine is sometimes like yours sluggish of the line when you nail it, it also hesitates occasionally when at speed and you go to accelerate it hit 2800 and stops for a sec before taking off agene, it's very strange. Then other days it pulls right from go and is very responsive thro the rev range.

throttle cable mod> What is this?
