Death off the line

Thanks for the responses.

All I have done so far is replace the fuel filter. I haven't had any problems since but the problem was intermittent and I never had it happen when I was driving to or from work so I don't know if I did any good or not. I plan to do some electrical testing but just haven't had time yet.

Had a similar problem with mine when I first bought it. It would drive fine until I drove it on the freeway for a while. Then would come to a stop and sit there for a few minutes and when I went to accelerate it would start to die. I would have to let on/off the gas to keep it from stalling. Turns out there was a software update from Ford so I had them reprogram the PCM and have had no problems since.

Thanks for the info. That is exactly the behavior I am experiencing. Do you know of a website I can visit to check if there is an update for my software? Shouldn't there be a sticker or something on the vehicle somewhere indicating that the update had been done if it had been done? Where would they likely put such a sticker, under the hood? I have only had the vehicle a year so I don't know what was done prior to that.

Thanks again. I will look for something about updates on the vehicle.

Just go to the dealer and ask for the service updates on it. If the computer was reflashed the service record will show that.

I was able to get out and buy a pressure gage. Here are the results.

Idle pressure 30psi spec 30 to 45

regulator vacuum hose removed 40psi spec 40 to 50

5 minute hold pressure 38psi spec 30 to 65

So I am barely meeting minimum spec. I have already replaced the fuel filter.

My question now is do I go ahead and replace the fuel pump or do you all think it will last a while longer?

I also intend to go to a dealer and see if there are any software upgrades needed.

I had a similar problem with a caravan. That was Front wheel drive though, and wouldn't apply to your truck, but when i would get on the gas from a stop, it would just crap out. You would have to do the nuetral drop from hell to keep it running off the line. I did EVERY THING! From fuel to spark to a new ecm. The problem ended up being a worn engine mount. The motor would kick back when you gave it gas and pinch the fuel line, starving it for gas and killing it.
Probably won't help diagnose your problem, but a funny story.

I saw a similiar thing happen with a Ford Probe. Everytime my friend would put the car in park it would die. It seemed to run fine in reverse. Turned out the intake hose between the mass air sensor and throttle body was split. So when the engine rocked back after putting it in gear, it caused an air leak and killed the engine. Duct tape fixed it for the meantime.

Duct Tape prevails once again...
