I let my roommate drive my '98 Explorer EB and he came back saying i need to fix the acceleration. I know i need to replace the spark plug wires, and i have just havent fixed it, so i figured thats what he was referring to.

When i get in the car today the accelarator is much lower to the ground and when i push the pedal it takes forever to get to 30-40MPH. Well im in a drive thru and then the pedal comes completely loose and is just hanging but what i would guess is the throttle wire. I took a look and it looked like the wire was way too loose and it also looked liked the pedal should be bolted down, but there were no bolts on the floor.

I have no clue what to do, i basically rigged it so i could get back home but i need to drive home from school in 2 weeks and theres no way im going 200miles with a broken accelerator.

Open the hood and look at the other end of that wire -- which should be at the throttle body (typically located on the top-middle/front section of the engine).

EDIT-- nevermind, I think MountaineerGreen has your issue solved :D

I've heard of that problem before. The spot welds that holds the pedal to the firewall break. You can take it to a shop and have it re welded, or use screws to mount it back.

Ok, my only concern is when i put it up to the welds as if it were secure, the line is stuck loose and there isnt enough tension as a normal pedal, is there a possibility that the throttle wire needs to adjusted, since basically the accelerator was pulled off and couldve extended the wire...

It would take a lot to stretch the cable. If you've got a drill with a bit driver just get some self drilling screws, and put it back where it's supposed to be then worry about the cable length. I put four in mine in a square pattern when it came off on me.

Ok I'll give it a try, although im at school so i dont really have tools.

Thanks guys, if its still messed up i come back here, all of you guys are very helpful, i appreciate it.

There is a TSB for Explorers, 00-24-3
ACCELERATOR PEDAL BRACKET - SHEET METAL CRACKS OR FATIGUES AT DASH PANEL AREA - ALL MODELS - VEHICLES BUILT 9/1/1990 THROUGH 7/1/1999, might want to check with the dealer for a fix.

BTW, mine broke about 4 months ago. I put a bolt through the hole in the bracket and the firewall. Works ok so far.
