Ok guys here is how I spent my Sunday. I installed the high flow intake filter on my 93 expolorer with the home made pvc adapter mod and after a couple of hours had it ready to go. ***It's just like the KKM*****

The vaccume hoses that went into the old intake box I just put screws in them. Had the negative battery connector off for the whole time to reset all the settings and mix settings.

Well I findished up cleaned up the tools and decided to drive it to check it out.

OMG it was pinging so badly I thought it would die on me.

So I go by Advance auto and pick up two cans of Sea Foam. I put one in the gas and one through the vaccume tree. Neighbors came over thinking house was on fire.

Drove it up the raid again. Still freaking pinging.

Ok what else could it be. So I talked with my neighbor and he said maybe I should figure out a way to connect the two hoses back into the system. So I removed the clips that hold the little diaphram thing in the air box and pulled it out. Then I punched two small holes in the top of the new filter and put the little thingy in the new intake and connected the hoses to it.

Drove it up the road and still *&*&$*& pinging. :fire:

I can't figure out what might cause it. The gas was fine before I put the mod in with no pinging so I figure it's got something to do with the high air flow.

I did clean the throttle body also with a toothbrush and some deep creep. If I were to check that top sensor on the top of the intake manifold what do I do to clean it or check it out?

That is the only other thing I can think of. You guys helped me to fix the 4WD and other mods to get better milage so I know you guys will have a lot of ideas.

Thanks for any help. It is drivable so I will leave it all on for now hopefully with your help it will stay.

Thanks in advance.

I am gonna guess the MAF isn't properly telling the engine your AF and you are leaning out and/or also getting excessive advance on the timing, or both. That is JUST a guess though Brett, but worth exploring. Sadly we cannot hook up a scanner to your Ex. as it's EEC-IV. Some of the high flow stuff needs different calilbrated MAF's. I know some of the engine teechies here can explain that to you.

Thanks Glacier. I appreciate your responce. Yeah I figure someone will know. I never really thought about that I guess. It sounds good sitting there idling and reving it but going down the road...... ghastly..

I vaguely reacall something about someone installing a high flow K&R system and having to change to a different MAF. Might try searching on that.

Brett, make absolutely sure you don't have an air leak between the throttle body and the MAF, in the homemade piping. A leak there will fool the MAF into thinking (anthromorphising I know :) ) that it's seeing less air, and the PCM will then give less fuel resulting in pinging.

funny you should mention that ROE. The rubber gasket at the throttle body for the OEM intake tubing is worn and has a hole in it. I've tightened it down pretty good but it still rattles. Maybe that is what it is. I just stopped by Advance auto and the guy there told me I would have to get that from a dealership.

Guess I'll give that a shot. The gasket at the MAF is fine so I really only need one. Also a larger flow MAF is not availible at advance.

Does anyone know if a mustang MAF would connect to the explorer sensor plug? And work?

The thing that kills me is it does it on the highway. Driving around town nothing but great responce. Omly if I really get on it does it do it and that is arond 3.5k rpms. but to set cruse at 65  :(

thanks guys

edit::::: I was able to get to work. After tightening the clamp down to the point of thinking I would strip it I can now drive on the highway. It chatters going up hill now. Not bad but it still does it. I will call the stealership nearest me and see if they have the rubber seals.

Also there is a pencil eraser size hole in the intake tube that I will need to patch. Would this be enough to cause the problem?

Yep, any hole in that portion of the air tube will cause pinging. Since this is a daily driver, you could temporarily close the air leaks with duct tape.

You could also pull the plug out of the octane shorting bar connector. IIRC, it'll pull about 3* of timing as a band-aid for you. It's a gray plug with 2 wires going into it, and it's near the EEC test connectors on the passenger side rear of the engine compartment.

also clean it as the oil from the new filter will get on the maf and cause it to read inaccurate

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll give it a shot this weekend.

I think you have an air leak somewhere in the intake, as was suggested. At least that's my first shot at the problem. Make sure the PVC joints are sealed properly, particularly where the MAF meets the tube and the MAF meets the filter. Also the connection between the tube and TB tends to leak if not properly fitted.

You also might consider resetting the computer, if you haven't done that already.
