Adjustable speed rear wiper?

All the newer SUV's and everything with the rear wipers usually have 2 or 3 speed settings, and our 1st gen explorers are just 1 speed, ON!

Lol, the back window only needs (for me) to be wiped like every minute or so, and i NEVER just turn the switch on and leave it going, so I always have to reach down and flip it once on then back off, is there any way to make like a timed switch or something to make the wiper turn on and wipe once then stop for a minute then go again?

I completely agree! I flip it on then off so it only wipes once. Then I flip it back on and off a minute later. I would love a speed controller for it.

You might be able to adapt the second gen system...but that would require a new motor and running the extra wire, doing the switch, blah, blah, blah...

There is probably a way to get it timed too, I just don't know the best way to go about it.

Kind of expensive, but it would work. Just have to mount it somewhere and wire it up.

i wouldnt mind working with the 2nd gen, what controls does it have?

im a pro at wiring and all that so it would be a fun project to try, what would i have to get?

You'll have to research some yourself...maybe go to a junkyard and look at one for find the wiring diagram.

I know the second gens have an intermittent rear wiper, it's a little dial on the dash I believe. The only other thing I know is that the wiper motor uses three wires instead of two like the first gen motor. So you would at least need the motor, switch and wiring, it may also have another module in there to do the intermittent stuff.

I never did. This post is now 6 years old lol, that Explorer blew the brake lines sometime after this "project" and I sold it.

Hi Brian, sorry to hear you had to let it go, I've repaired a couple of rear lines like that.

I have my 93 rear hatch on my 99 Explorer, using a 97 wiper motor and wiring. The 99 vehicle wiring works with the 95-97 hatch wiring and wiper.

So you had it right with that list, needed are the 95-97 wiper motor, the wiring to the dash, and a switch like the 95-01's use. Chances are that switch can be fitted to the 91-94 dash somewhere.



I'm also thinking of possibly relocating my 98-01 washer bottle to the back. I bought a 95-97 rear washer bottle to try. That's to make more space under the hood, if needed. The front 98-01 wiper pump motor has two outlets, one for the front wipers and one for the rear. I'm wondering of that two outlet pump can be installed into the 91-97 rear washer bottle. If so, then the washer lines of the 98-01's could be used to feed the front wiper squirters.

I was upset about it at first, but we only paid $800 for it, and it had well over 200k, and I ended up getting (Dont quote me, its been quite a few years) around $1500 for it. Definitely got my moneys worth from it!

Its good to see though that this is possible, I know if I ever got another first gen, id be making the conversion.

You know its funny, I had three 2nd gens, and now a 4th gen, and I still just turn the rear wiper on and off, because even with the intermittent settings, its too fast 90% of the time.

I know how that is. I drive a POS mail truck, which the first was a plain S10 chassis, and they didn't even give it intermittent wipers. They run all the time, and given the age and cheap blades, they are so annoyingly loud. I turn them off whenever I can. It adds danger, and they don't care about that. I'll skip talking about the four recap tires.
