That is an ingenious approach! To be honest, I had never even thought about taking the board out of the housing. Do you have any pictures of the process?
I don’t have any currently, but it would be pretty easy for me to get some. The cover comes off without much trouble

Here are some photos. You can see that i had to trim the cover a bit to not interfere with the module itself, but it is covered up with that felt pad that Ford sends with it - if you bought it from them

How much is it and how can I order it
I got the top panel from Ford, and got the center console unit from a wrecked civilian Explorer. Part number for the top panel is LB5Z-78045A76-GA. It cost me $275. Did the install myself.

Thank you so much

I was finally able to complete the install. I ended finding an bit more room. I modified the stock brackets and bolted them together.

I was able to tuck the mounted board up and under the above facia
IMG_20240527_145623_282[1].jpg

Only a small bit or trimming was required on the base of the console.~ 1/2 depth and 3/4 of the way across.

However, now the audio wont play. I get about 2-3 secs and it shuts off. Also Noticing some static sound from one of the speakers however I can't figure out where because there is not enough time.

Any thoughts? Did I ruin the main board?

Hi, I’m in the middle of changing the console now. I have all the parts , just have to take the circuit board out. Is there extra slack in the harness? Do I need pull the harness from the top, or cut any tie wraps or anything?

Hi, it looks good. I’m possibly thinking about finding the correct harness, and mounting the radio in the rear.

I would double check that your connections are secure, and make sure there is no kind of metal or screws touching the board.

I was actually running into the problem of having too much wiring harness for most of the radio components. It gets a little tight when it squeezed up in there. The only thing that I wish I had a little bit more slack on was the parking brake actuator. I snipped a couple of the tie downs but really didn't have to adjust the wiring harness all that much. I did not cut into any of the black over sheath either.

Do you also know what connections are on the back of the unit ? If could figure these out, I will try to extend the wires to the rear of the truck.

I was thinking the same thing early on, but unfortunately, it's much harder than it looks.

Two of the connections are antennas which are actually routed from the back, so those shouldn't be much of an issue.

One connection is a proprietary connection between the unit and the display and nearest I can tell there's not a longer one in the Ford parts bin.

There is one USB type b connector which is proprietary on both ends, that is the connector into the unit and the console on either end respectively has specialized external clips.

And lastly there's a main bulkhead that appears to have most of the speaker wires.

I was able to find a factory service manual, or at least that's what it looked like online.

Information Wiring without Sync

Some factory wiring seems to be available from the dealership if you can find what you are looking for.

I was thinking that, if you get a civilian wire harness, the extended wires would be within that harness. You would only use the needed wires. Just a thought lol.

Yeah, if you can figure that out, I'm sure quite a few number of people will be quite happy! Myself included!

Looking at the online manual that I sent over, the difference seems to be between cars with and without sync versus police vs civilian.

Let us know what you find out! I would love to move all of the radio stuff to the back!

Ok, will do. I figured the speaker wires should plug into the rear amp, so the only wires that would be needed , would be the antenna wires, and a possible long USB.
