I have a 05' explorer AWD, with just over 14K miles, and this is the latest and greatest issue.

ill be driving along, on the highway, 70-75mph, and all of a sudden, i feel a Abrupt THUD, the ABS light goes ON, the 4x4 light goes ON, i get a beep from the AVDTRAC saying its OFF.

i have no idea whats going on, but something is not rite, today was the 3rd time this happened. and all the lights will stay ON, untill you shut the car off.

has anyone had this issue, and what did the dealer do to resolve it ?

I have had the "thud"...almost like the engine shut off for a plit second. No lights have ever come on on the dash before though. My dealer said there was nothing wrong.

Hi aspitaletto, yes please let us know what dealer has to say on that one and what they have to do to resolve it. I have a 2003 Explorer EB (4.6 V8), while running, the abs light and advancetrac warning light came on pretty much at the same time, then message center window notifies me check advancetrac (basically telling me that advancetrac was off). I didn't notice anything different with the performace. I called the dealer and told me could be advancetrac relay or abs sensor (since those to are related). I used the vehicle again the next day and guess what? smoke start coming out from the steering column (scared the heck out me, especially with my one year old son with me). Turned out to be the "clockspring" where airbags, cruise control, horn are connected. Replaced the clockspring and the abs/advancetrac warning went off. Ford dealer performed the service. Please let us know what they say about yours.

I may have had something similar, but I don't have AdvTrac. At 20k the ABS light would come on, I could cycle the key and it would go out for a while. Also too, the ABS acted up, it would turn on sometimes with the wheels still turning, it sounded like a thud, or the ABS pump would run for several seconds. Took it to the dealer and an ABS sensor was bad. Once replaced all was fine.

I have same problem with my 05 XLT, but no lights come on. Always between 70-80mph. I have 33,000 miles and it's been doing it since 21,000. I've taken it to the dealer repeatedly and they can't seem to find out what's wrong with it. It travel from Cleveland to Chicago regularly and its done it well over 100 times. Let me know if you guys are able to figure out whats happening.

Question for the guys with AWD:

ive noticed that if i am in a parking lot situation, if i am making a hard turn, ill get the same thud as described previously in this thread, it feels like the AWD is engaging for a split second. this might be the speed sensor / ABS sensor 's additional symptom. does anyone notice this neuance ?

aspitaletto, have the dealer figured out what was going on with your xplorer? please update us. thanks

For AWD my quess is no. When my ABS sensor went most of the time it would turn itself off within seconds. The few times it didn't come on but was failing - the pump would turn on once or twice, always straight line.
If AWD, (not command trac which is electric) then there are no electronic controls, AWD uses Viscous Clutches. When it starts to go, the whole truck will buck, shudder, tires skip during hard turns.

a driver side REAR wheel Speed sensor was tested as bad, ill hopefully have my truck back by tonight

hopefully

Any luck with the rear wheel speed sensor fixing the problem? Mine seems to be getting VERY quirky lately. Dealership can't seem to figure out what the problem is. It's getting to the point where I have trouble excellerating during a turn or curve.

advancetrac

on my 05 xlt when i first take off it feels like it trys to go in four wheel low then the adv trac light comes on and the message center says check adv trac. the abs light stays on as well. can any one help me?

Read some of the older posts in this section or type your current problem into the search box at the top of the web page and see if it brings up any similar problem, past posts on this issue. I don't know much myself on these Advance Trac systems but I'm sure some others do.

The problem described here is almost always a faulty ABS sensor. Get the codes pulled and it will tell exactly which one. I've been through it a few times.

Similar problem here. From a stop i can take off easy. I hear something like a dull roar, then it kinda pops without a sound and the advance track turns off. Message center says to check it. Also the 4x4 high light flashes. As long as atrack is turned off i have no problems at all. no codes. Any ideas? started when i jammed on the brakes to keep from hitting a dear this morning.

You need a reader that will pull ABS codes. My SCT won't so I had to borrow a proper reader. Chances are if those lights are on you have an ABS code thrown. Now the idea is to find out which one.

It really binds up..Then releases hard. I noticed when the 4x4 high light flashes i have no front diff. I can spin the back tires with out the front engaging. I will call dealer tomorrow..
