I'll try to make this as simple as possible so I'm not writing a novel on here....

I had my 2007 4.0 4x4 EX transmission (5r55s) rebuilt when I had only 80k mi. It was exhibiting the 2nd to 3rd shift flare and it would be clunky and vibrate through shifts.

Drove perfect for about 15k mi and then it started to flare between 2nd and 3rd again. Took it back to the tranny shop and they readjusted my band. I was back there a few days later because it started again so they replaced my solenoids.

That bought me about 5k mi before the flare was back on occasion again. I was out of warranty so I just lived with it as I was sick of having to drop my car off at the shop and being without it.

So now I'm at 38k mi after rebuild, I needed to put new tires on it and wanted bigger tires than stock. I put 265/70/r17's on from 265/65/r17. I took a 300mi road trip and my EX started flaring big time every time it went from 2nd to 3rd. I started to get 500rpm flares opposed to the 150-250rpm flares that were previously happening.

I did some research and found that changing to larger or smaller tires from stock can cause a lot of wear and tear on the transmission. I bought the SCT X4 flash tuner so I could tell my EX's computer what size tire I'm using. There were also preloaded tunes that enhanced performance and shifts. I loaded the 91 octane tune because that's what I run through my EX. For the next two days I experienced the best shifting I'd ever seen my vehicle do.

After the two days the flare was back but more like it was before I switched to my larger tires. So I opted for the aj1e solutions servos, I installed them and had excellent shifting for 2 days and then my flare was back.

What's strange about the flare is it seems to occur when I first start driving. Then after it warms up it shifts much better. The tranny has also developed a harsh downshift to 1st when I decelerate and drop below 20ish mph.

My next step is going to be adjusting the bands one more time, perhaps I did it incorrectly after I installed the servos. If that doesn't do it I think I'll be changing out the valve body and solenoids along with a filter and fluid change. I'm so frustrated by this issue I might bypass the VB and install a Reman myself. I figure between the parts I want to replace plus filter and ATF I'll probably spend $300 to $400. I can buy a reman with all the updates for around $1800 and I'm just not sure I want to invest any more money in this transmission.

If love to hear any thoughts and ideas any of you might have as to what you would do if you had this issue. I love this truck I just want it to work right so please feel free to offer up advice or let me know if I'm headed in the right direction with the VB replacement. Thanks in advance!
