You should be looking for threads in this forum concerning that SOHC motor and it's possible problems.

I've got a 98 XLT 4x4 4.0 SOHC. 182,000 original owner miles on it. New IAC, MAF, shocks, upper/lower balls, upper/lower intake man gaskets, new rad, steering rack, plus various other goodies. Full leather and just re-did the driver's seat leather.
Very well cared for... no timing chain issues.
And if I could get 3G's for it, I'd consider selling it.
Not knowing anything about what you're looking at.. that think is WAAY overpriced.

look for a V8 (AWD or 2WD depending on where you live and what you plan to do with the truck). the SOHC V6 sucks (timing chain problems abound) and the 4.0L V6 is a bit under powered and can suffer with cracked heads and blown head gaskets. the V8 get only slightly worse MPG than the V6's, but is a pretty much bullet-proof motor and trans combo. i'd look for a 2000 or 2001 and, at least in my neck of the woods, you should plan on spending $2500-$3200 for a nice one (less for one that has a few problems). my whole family is driving them right now and we love them. i try to pay around $1800-$2000 and fix the problems.

if you're thinking about an AWD, there are some other things to check for. just ask.
