2004 Mountaineer
I recently replaced the receiver/radio on my 04 Mountaineer with an after market set. The unit (bravo view ind-100U) works well, except for the below 2 issues.

1. There's a loud pop noise when I start the vehicle. I actually came across someone else who had the same problem, during a google search. Can't find it anymore. I connected all the wires correctly.. I think... since all features work correctly. Is this a grounding issue? How do I fix it?

2. The volume and other stereo controls from my steering wheel don't work anymore. How can I get them to work? Can I?

Thank you gentlepeople.

As for the popping I honestly don't know. The steering wheel controls for most aftermarket radios require buying a separate little box that you plug other wires into to make the steering wheel controls work. I know that is vague just that I have never done one of those before so I don't know exactly what you need.

The popping noise is most likely a bad ground. Sometimes you need to run a heavy ground close to the radio. Sometimes it works better to ground right to the battery. As for the steering controls, you need to buy an aftermarket box. Depends on what head unit you have, maybe not even an option at all. Pretty unlikely that unit has the capability.

EDIT: After looking at the specs on that unit, and the price, the popping may just be in the unit. That's a super low quality head. I'd return it if I were you.

Thanks for the response guys. I bought 2 of these units. One for my town and country and one for my mountaineer. We don't spend a whole lot of time in the cars, so thought this would be sufficient. The popping noise does not occur in the town and country. Only the mountaineer. I'll see if I can ground it.

Another question - My left side speakers do not work. This was from even before the switching of units. So, it's not the new unit. The right side works fine. Sometimes, the left starts working for a couple of minutes and then goes off again. I thought it was a loose contact and removed the panel to check for a loose connection or a broken wire. Couldn't find one. Could it be the fuse. Doesn't explain the right side working though.

The pop is caused by the remote signal to subwoofer amp that is 12v and the stock sub amp is +5v. You need to put a voltage regulator to step down the voltage (it's less than $2.00 in radioshack) Other people use resistors to also avoid the pop.

If the new head unit has an option for remote steering control (usually an input) at the back then you could purchase a remote steering adapter (PAC or SWI) to enable that functionality.

your speaker might be bad and sticking. You could try swapping them (left to right or back to front) to isolate the issue.
