After one hour 93 explorer shuts off

If your fuel system is not venting then as you draw fuel out of your tank you are creating a vacuum. It will eventually get too strong of a vacuum and your pump will not be strong enough to continue to draw fuel. I have had this happen. The gurgling you are hearing is probably air slowly returning to the tank from somewhere not totally sealed. I have had this happen on a few different vehicles. Just humor me please and take your gas cap off and try to recreate the problem.

Well I cant say I ran the test you describe to see if a faulty cap and excess vacuum is the culprit. I did however go buy a Motorcraft gas cap from the Ford stealership. No change in terms of rough idle with a warm or hot restart. I stopped paying attention to the gurgle once the hot start rough idle went away...with new spark plugs!

As we know, some plugs on the 94 are an SOB to get at. I found one fouled, another cracked (upon removal) and none were platinum tipped. I replaced with platinum tipped plugs and new plug wires and goodby rough idle.

had two ford 80 t-birds at peak operating temps they sometimes shut down you have to cool em off before they will run again ...I bought them used the owners had problems with them overheating too fast and running ruff without any power

when diagnosed the heater core and the radiator needed flushing big gobs of calcite in the radiator and heater core caused immanent power problems and starting failure he ha .... almost totally crippled like running on two cylinders after 15 min of driving

.......flushing the cooling system will solve the thermostatic shut down in some cases
drain a cool motor fill with hose water leave the cap off put calcite remover type flush product run for a while a few revs turn on the heater while flushing after about 20 minutes

let cool don't do this past a scalding temp loosen up the lower radiator hose then with a garden hose in the radiator cap running start the motor and quicly remove lower hose to drain make sure your water levels stay toped up ...... big gobs of calcite should come out at a slow idle repeat process if still chunking when satisfied fill with half and half drive for an hour to see if its thermastatic related

this worked great on my Tbirds but be carefull not to hot you when you pull the hose can get it hot fast with motor running

pulling the lower hose may be different with the EXP but its worked for me a couple times its a way to buy a good used car and evidence to use purified water ..... he ha

calcite was my problem in both cases but those were 302's I used prestone and some water pump lubricant to return the system lime or CLR itself may be to rough on seals but pep boys used to sell a can of flush product that delt directly with the lime and calcite deposits its advised to add water pump lubricant to the radiator when returning the system

hot shut down is a hot shut down
