I am doing somework on my interior right now and i was planning on fiberglassing a new dash board. Like somebody else on here likes do ;) anyways i was wondering if it is possible to buy some new speedometers and tachometers and all the new gauges to install into my dash. To make it look more clean and how hard would it be to install those. Are they just plug and play or would it require running wire into the engine or somewhere?

98 Mercury?

You can buy gages that work with the signal from your stock computer and sensors for both your tachometer and your speedometer.
Both of your factory gages are electrical (signal from the computer and speed sensor control them)
as far as the stock water temp, oil pressure and voltage
You can pick electrical or mechanical gages.

However you dont want to lose your dashpot (MIL, warning lights, etc) so you have to figure something out for those.

There are also aftermarket all in one displays you can use that will wire up and talk to your computer, they can display all sorts of information

So would any aftermarket speedometer and all the other gauges fit or would i need vehicle specific gauges?

Fit? I was under the impression you were making a whole new instrument cluster to house the aftermarket gages.

There are no gages on the market that will bolt in place of your factory tach and speedo, you can however get/make overlays to change their appearance.

No i meant fit into the preexisting electrical harness, or would i have to splice all the wires into it?

the wires from the truck to your speedometer and tachometer will work with aftermarket gages that are made to work with your Ford OBD-II computer.

Contact Autometer or your autometer sales people in town and ask them which gages are right for you.
