My girlfriend is having problems with her air conditioning and I need to get it fixed so I can get my explorer back (I lent it to her). She has a 2001 Taurus and the air conditioning has quit producing cold air. I checked the pressure on the low side and it would fluctuate from 25-45 whenever the compressor (or clutch) would kick on and off. I also did a search on here and read about the blend door problem. Could this be it? Also, is it normal for the pressure to fluctuate like that? As I was driving it the other day, I noticed that at highway speeds the rpms would fluctuate just about 50-100 rpms every once and a while. Could a minor vaccum leak be the culprit. The car only has 11,000 miles on it. Any information is greatly appreciated because it is in the 90's here and I am missing my explorer. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply but if it was low on coolant the low side pressure would not be around 45 psi. I am wondering if it has something to do with a relay or switch as it happened suddenly. One day the air was ice cold the next day it was ambient.

Yeah, I think you're right about it not being the coolant. No idea what it might be instead though, you should probably get a better response from other guys in the AM when they wake up, its getting late now :)

When it gets to 25 I assume the clutch is cycing out (it should), and when it rises to about 45 it kicks back in. How often is this cycling? If the cycling is every 10-15 seconds you are indeed low on refrigerant. Depending on outside air temps when you do this, the cycle time should be closer to a minute or longer. (I do have my charts handy, but it can and will cycle in a cooler environment... full sun 100 degrees maybe not. Are you using a gauge set? If so what are the high side pressures you are running ?
